Captain John Smith was an English soldier, explorer, colonial governor and author. He played an important role in the establishment of the Jamestown Colony (in 1606), which was the first permanent English Settlement in North America. When Jamestown was established, Smith trained the first settlers to farm and work, which saved the colony from early devastation.
